The summer is drawing to a close, the weather is all over the bloody shop, and you’re starting to ponder the kind of outfits you’re going to be assembling as bonfires and ghouls draw ever closer. Whatever that outfit of your mind entails, you know what’s going to top it off perfectly? A trench coat.
We’ve taken the liberty of creating this page to help you find the best trench coats for men and, more specifically, the best trench coat for you.
What is the best trench coat brand?
Traditional Trench Coats
Aside from Percival's trench coats —which are the best by a long way and you can quote us on that—in terms of traditional trench coats, Burberry and Mackintosh are your go-tos. Both companies have been in the trench coat game for well over a hundred years, and they both very much know what they’re doing.
Waterproof Trench Coat
Honestly, look no further than good old Percival for a waterproof trench. Find better than our Waterproof Auxiliary Greyson Trench, and we’d very much like to talk to you. Private White V.C. do a nice one but it’ll cost you over £1,000 more than a Percival coat. Your call.
Short Trench Coat
Again—and you can ask GQ if you think we’re lying—Percival’s Sherlock is unchallenged in the short trench coat field. The people at GQ called it “peerless” and we happen to agree. The Sherlock is also waterproof, it’s cut perfectly above the knee and below the hip, made with Italian cotton, cut & sewn in Portugal, plenty of big old pockets, and a more iconic silhouette than the pipe-touting detective himself.
Black Trench Coat
COS do a lovely black trench. Private White V.C. also have a good one on the market. However, as you probably already know, for quality, style, and value, you’re already on the right website. Our Trench Coat made with Casentino wool in black is an absolute joke. The best your money can buy, and literally ten times more affordable than other brands… We won’t judge you if you shop elsewhere, but we wouldn’t understand your decision on any level. If you're looking for more ways to wear it, we've got you covered—check out our guide on how to style a trench coat.
Casual Trench Coat
There are good casual trench coats to be found out there. Row Montrose do one for around $4,000, Buck Mason have one that’ll set you back $398, or you could get the best on the market by forking out a comparatively measly sum for a Percival Waterproof Auxiliary Sherlock. It comes in 7 (SEVEN) different colourways, it’s light as a feather and resistant to weather, and it’s gonna make you look like you solve unfathomable murder cases simply to protect your brilliant mind from the tedium of everyday life.
Best Trench Coat for a Date
For a date, personally, we’re going a little more dressy. The Waterproof Auxiliary Sherlock in Tan is a great option to pair with a nice shirt and smart trousers, or even a black or navy roll neck to contrast the lighter shade of the trench.
Best Trench Coat to wear to the Office
For a trip to the office we’re recommending our Auxiliary Greyson Trench. You’ll look smart, understated, and you’ll feel like a 1950s detective a la L.A. Noire or something like that. That sort of vibe will carry you through the most difficult of work days.
Trench Coat Alternatives
If you’re not totally sure a trench coat is the vibe you’re looking for, cast your pork pies over these equally superb alternatives:
