Once upon a time, fairytales weren’t so fair. For centuries, human beings have passed down stories from generation to generation. Cautionary tales designed to warn of the dangers of this volatile world, garnished with princesses and wolves and scary old ladies and evil kings. Many of these stories began life as adult stories, told for entertainment in the home before radio and television and novels. They were often brutal and they always had a moral… often those morals were questionable, but they were morals nonetheless. These fairytales were collected by the Brothers Grimm and, over time, they have become a symbol of childhood, with some of the gory details defanged. Less blood, more pumpkins. Less infanticide, more porridge.
We love a good cautionary tale — always have, always will. There’s no better way to usher in the autumn than with a sinister fairytale. We wanted to do something special to celebrate the imminent arrival of Perci’s AW23 collection, Cautionary Tales, and so, on a dark, dark night, in a dark, dark recording booth in a dark, dark dungeon, the moon hooded and cloaked in dark, dark clouds, we rounded up some of our pals to record one of our favourites, Little Red Riding Hood — style icon (you find an original red riding hood in a vintage shop, you’re laughing all the way to the bank). As it turns out, not all fairytales have a happy ending, especially when you hire the people we hire. We should’ve known, to be fair.
Watch the video, starring: The Big Bad Tom Davis, Phil Wang, Dane Baptiste, Ed Knight, Henry Rowley, Grace Campbell, Lloyd Griffith and What Willy Cooks.
Will they all live happily ever after? Will they even go for a pint? Is our recording assistant a Mormon puppet? Stay tuned for more AW23 Cautionary Tales.
