Style Guide: How to Style a Scarf

Scarves. Easy, yeah? Just sling it round your neck and get on with it, surely? Nah. Wrong. Done properly, a scarf can really elevate an outfit to another level of sophisticated wintrous man in a Richard Curtis film. So come with us and learn how to get the most out of that nice scarf you’ve been waiting to don all year.

Why does every man need a scarf?

Every man needs a scarf because it’s flipping baltic out there, isn’t it? Beyond the subterranean mercury levels in your thermometer, though, every man needs a scarf because a scarf rounds off a winter outfit like nothing else, and can elevate an average fit into something properly head-turning.

How should a guy wear a scarf?

The main thing to think about is how it compliments the overall outfit. Sometimes the best choice of scarf knot is not to knot at all—a knot’s a lot if you’re feeling hot, a casual drape is better. We’re going to take you through some of the essential knots you need to know shortly—learn a few of them and add them to your arsenal, then you can tailor your scarf to your fit like the sophisticated fellow you are.

When should men wear a scarf?

Men’s scarves can be a great way of adding a layering effect and illusion of length to a simple outfit. They pair especially well with long coats or jackets that fall below the hip. Ultimately, though, you can wear a scarf with just about any winter outfit if your neck is a bit nippy

Casual Scarf Styles

Allow us to suggest a couple of casual scarf styles to you, for those occasions when you’re not doing anything particularly fancy, but you still want to keep your neck toasty.

Static Scarf with a t-shirt

Perci’s Static Scarf is a scarf for all occasions. It’ll go with your best winter coat, but it’ll also pair perfectly with a simple Tee. The Static is a chunky scarf made of a high-quality alpaca wool and mohair blend that is going to keep your neck lovely and warm whilst adding a bit of class to your casual fit. It’s available in Oak or Ecru.

The Loop Knot with a wool overcoat

A wool overcoat, such as this lovely Pea Coat, and a scarf are a perfect couple. They’re the OAPs who still hold hands and sit on park benches at peace with each other. A simple knot to employ here is the loop knot, where you fold the scarf in half, joining the two ends, then feed those two ends through the loop you’ve created in the middle of the scarf. There’s also an easy way to jazz up the classic loop knot—if you just thread one of the ends of the scarf through the loop and let the other end lie naturally, that’s a Parisian scarf knot. A subtle modification, but you’ll know you’re a cultured gentleman of the world when you do it.

Smart-Casual Scarf Styling

Scarves are well suited to smart styles and far more versatile than your average man realises. You’re not the average man, though. You’re here for a reason. Let’s take a look at some of the options available to you.

Mohair Scarf with a Tailored Jacket

For a really very classy look, pair a Mohair Scarf with a wintry Wool Tailored Jacket. It’s going to look suave simply draped, but if you need that extra bit of protection against the cold, maybe opt for our friend the Parisian knot, or maybe even an overhand knot—where you drape your scarf, make one end longer than the other, cross the long end over the shorter one, then do the old under-over so that the two ends of the scarf are now of equal length and lying flat and vertically.

Lightweight Scarf with a Knitted Polo

We don’t mean to boast but we’re sort of the Knitted Polo world leaders here at Perci, and those knitted polos happen to go very nicely with a lightweight scarf. This long-sleeved Pablo Knitted Polo is a great choice.

Winter-Ready Scarf Looks

Football Scarves are having a big old moment right now. Depending on where you live and which team you support, a football scarf can be problematic, however. What better way to combat that issue than to opt for a Percival Football Scarf? No lunatic in a pub is going to have a pop at you for wearing a Perci scarf. Unless they’re a menswear ultra who works for some lesser brand. The chances of that are infinitely lower, though.

Chunky Knit Scarf with a Fleece Jacket

Alternatively, you could pair a nice Chunky Knit Scarf with a mega-versatile Fleece Jacket for ultimate comfort and easy, effortless winter style. A real failsafe option.
