What are winter clothes?
Summer is minimal, it’s linen, it’s lightweight, it’s moisture-wicking breeziness. Winter isn’t. Winter separates the men from the boys in terms of style. Winter is layering and merino wool and corduroy and jumpers and your favourite coat. There’s more scope for creativity in winter, and it is to be embraced, like a warm hug by the fireside.
What are the best colours for a winter wardrobe?
Colourwise, winter is the perfect time to bust out those warm, dark tones. We’re talking your burnt oranges, your browns, your camel. Basically, anything that reminds you of something that would warm you up in the winter, like smouldering embers, a hot chocolate, the sun itself—low in the sky on a clear winter’s day, shortwaves filtered by atmosphere and turning everything reddish and pleasant.
What are the colours for winter 2024/2025?
We’re not just picking colours at random here—this is direct from colour merchants Pantone’s report from the AW24/25 London Fashion Week. Some of our favourites include ‘cherry tomato’ (which is actually a sort of vibrant deep orange), pureed pumpkin, misted yellow, and ‘eggplant’ (aubergine on this side of the Atlantic). Essentially, and we’re quoting Pantone directly here, “a versatile mix of saturated brights with rich nature based tones increases the possibilities.” Couldn’t have put it better ourselves, so we didn’t.
What is the best fabric for winter?
We’re going to posit three contenders for best winter fabric. This triple threat bout is scheduled for one fall, winner takes all.
Flannel
Flannel is a cold weather champ. It’s soft, it’s comfy, and it’s an excellent insulator of heat. It’s certainly the most versatile material of the three fabrics in this icy death match. The only danger you face when working flannel into your men’s winter outfit is to make sure you avoid cliché. Flannel shirts and jeans have long been the go-to, failsafe outfit for blokes the world over—it’s worth taking care with the rest of your outfit to make sure something pops out and distinguishes you from the crowd so that you don’t look like you didn’t know what to wear and simply chucked on a flannel.
Mohair
Mohair is better than no hair, and it’s damn sure better than linen in colder climes. Made of Angora goat hair, it’s naturally glossy. It’s got a sheen to it like a heavily coveted Pokémon card. The shiny Charizard of fabric. Despite its soft feel and cosiness, mohair is a coarse material that naturally traps air and keeps you warm. That slightly fuzzy texture is a winner for winter cardigans and jumpers.
Corduroy
Corduroy is instantly recognisable, with valleys and ridges of fabric running parallel to each other providing its famous texture. Done well, corduroy can be a real super-effective (like that shiny Charizard vs a Venusaur). It’s warm but it’s not the warmest. What it lacks in heat retention it makes up for in texture and durability. Well worth its place in your winter wardrobe rotation. This Corduroy Blazer is a corker for a Christmas party.
What do guys wear for winter?
We’ve done fabrics, now let’s have a look at some classic men’s winter items that we should all have ready to go should the occasion call for it.
Minnesota Overcoat
Best thing to come out of Minnesota? Prince. Prince is the best thing to come out of Minnesota. Second best thing to come out of Minnesota? The Minnesota Overcoat. Unfortunately, this one doesn’t come in purple… yet. It does come in Navy and Oak Twill, and it’s your ideal winter overcoat, and the perfect outermost layer for any men’s winter outfit. Pair with a raspberry beret.
What are the best coats for winter?
If you’re cold, you’re uncomfortable, and if you’re uncomfortable, you’re not unconfident, and if you’re unconfident it’s going to show. Staying warm and toasty is therefore going to be key to your winter style. We’ve already mentioned the Minnesota Overcoat, which is a winter cracker, but a Pea Coat will also see you through the chill. A Sherlock is a timeless option for wet weather and keeping the elements at bay, as is a Greyson but make sure you layer up underneath, as they’re both lightweight by design and whilst they’ll keep you dry and wind-resistant, you might need a bit of extra warmth underneath.
Men's Coats
Cable Knit Jumper
A Cable Knit Jumper is a stalwart of men’s winter wardrobes across the decades. They looked good a hundred years ago, and they look good now. Just get one, don’t argue. Ours come with a slightly oversized fit and heavy gauge cable knit.
What jumpers are best for winter?
Honestly, any high quality jumper is good for winter, but it’s a great excuse to rock something chunky with a textured silhouette. Walk around town pretending you’re Hugh Grant or the lead singer of a band who’s shooting the video for a Christmas song that will prove to be the basis of his retirement fund. Nothing better.
Denim Jeans
Denim Jeans are a great choice for winter legwear, as they’re tough, durable, and versatile. Jeans go with just about anything, they’re ultra-low maintenance, and they’re going to see you through those intrepid months without complaint. Winter is jeans season.
Oversized T-shirt
Put simply, there are very few informal situations in which an Oversized T-shirt isn’t going to look good, feel as comfortable as a fireside nap, and compliment your frame. Just stock up and have them ready to go at all times, is our advice. Tuck ‘em in as a base layer, wear them untucked and add length to your silhouette. An oversized tee is a men’s winter staple.
Chromatic Cardigan
We actually mentioned these tasty Chromatic Cardigans earlier when we were harping on about mohair, but it’s worth revisiting because these bad boys are gonna take your winter smart-casual game to the goddamn stratosphere, keeping you cosy, comfy, stylish, and impressing your grandma at dinner, all at the same time. An absolute get-out-of-jail-free card this festive season. Get on it.
