What is considered a heavy weight cotton t-shirt?
Most tees are weighed in ounces per square yard of material. If you grew up in the UK and are under the age of fifty, there’s a good chance that means nothing to you. To try and clarify things a bit:
1 ounce = 28.3495 grams
1 yard = 0.9144 metres
Does that help? Or, like us, did you grow up learning some amorphic combination of metric and imperial systems, resulting in the concept of weight meaning absolutely nothing to you? Do you look at a set of scales the way a dog might look at a set of scales? Like haha what? We’ve got your back — keep reading.
How heavy is a normal short sleeve t-shirt?
On average, tees weigh somewhere between 4-5 ounces per square yard. That’s roughly 180 grams per square metre. Use this as your yard stick when buying online. Or your metre stick.
How heavy is a heavyweight t-shirt?
Anything over 6 ounces per square yard can be classified as ‘heavy’. Some brands will class 6 ounces as midweight — insert David Brent ‘Ooooo… you’re ‘ard.GIF’. There are a few 14 ouncers on the market, which seems unnecessary unless you’re wearing it under chainmail as extra defence against archers on a battlefield. The sweet spot lies somewhere betwixt the two — between 6 and 9 ounces, preferably — but personal preference bears a heavy cross in this argument.
Are oversized and heavyweight t-shirts the same?
Nope. Although they will often overlap — the centre of that Venn diagram is pretty big. Heavyweight tees are made of thicker, heavier material, but aren’t always oversized. Oversized tees aren’t always made of heavyweight material but, often, they are, as heavyweight materials help with the natural hang and silhouette of oversized tees, adding structure to the fit.
How thick are heavyweight t-shirts?
They’re a little thicker than regular tees by their very nature, and that’s part of their charm. They’re more durable, generally made of heavier or denser fabric than regular tees. Embrace the thickness. Dare we spell thickness with two ‘c’s? Doesn’t seem very us. You know what? No.
Are heavyweight t-shirts comfortable?
Do fish wee in the sea? (They do — we checked.) Heavyweight tee shirts are comfortable. They’re very, very, very comfortable. Remember when your parents or your sports coach put their hand on your shoulder and said, “Well done, Andrew. You are the best footballer we’ve ever seen and if you don’t make it at the top level of the game, I reckon you’ll at least end up writing interesting articles about heavy tee-shirts for the UK’s best menswear company.”? That’s what wearing a heavyweight tee-shirt feels like.
What material can heavyweight t-shirts be made from?
Almost always cotton. We use 100% organic cotton in our heavyweight tees, such as this Rumplestiltskin Oversized T Shirt. Only the best as far as we’re concerned. You might find some shirts on the market that are partly made with polyester, but this lowers the quality of the piece and makes it less sustainable.
Why are heavy shirts good?
They’re comfy, they feel amazing on your skin, they’re tough and durable without necessarily being any rougher than regular tees, they’re great for layering and they’re going to be on your wardrobe rotation for yours. Stock up now.
