Styling Guide: How to Layer for Winter

How to layer an outfit for winter

Winter layering is an opportunity for creativity and you should embrace it open-heartedly. Mix up colours, switch up the textures, and have fun with it. There are some basics to remember i.e. keep the snugger layers on the inside out and go gradually looser-fitting as you build out. Let’s delve into this properly now, shall we? Make like an onion and get layery with us.

Benefits of layering

The benefits of layering your outfit are numerous and stupendous. Layering let’s you wear a bunch of your favourite clothes at the same time, it allows you to add a bit of texture and shaping to your outfit, and it’s great for regulating your temperature in these most meteorologically fickle months when the mercury jumps up and down either side of zero like a frosty kangaroo.

Key Layers for a Perfect Winter Look

Whilst layering is an opportunity for creativity, certain layers are going to be vital for your winter wardrobe. That midlayer is crucial for bringing everything together—a literal bridge between your base and outer layers. They need to be interesting enough to work without the outer layer, and snug enough that they don’t take up too much space with the outer layer over the top. It’s a fine art. Suggestions below.

Fleece Jacket

When it comes to midlayers you can’t go wrong with a fleece jacket, and particularly this Anderson Tetris Jacket. Winter colours all blended together, made of top quality wool and recycled polyester, and a big old roomy chest pocket. It’ll keep you toasty and can be the star of the show if you need it to be, whilst also allowing plenty of room for another layer on top. A real team player.

Quilted Jacket

With a snug fit, warmth for days, recycled quilted lining, and a two-way zip, the Quilted Jacket has evolved into this wintry ecological niche to be a midlayer monster that can’t be ignored. Like a fleece jacket, it’ll do you a stellar job as an outer layer too, but an overcoat is going to slip over your quilted jacket seamlessly.

Which jacket is best for winter in the UK?

No one jacket is best for the UK winter—the weather is disloyal and often straight-up malicious. A fleece jacket and quilted jacket are great options, but so is a Leather Jacket, especially as an outer layer. It’ll keep the wind out and it’s a proper statement.

Cardigans

We mentioned midlayers earlier, didn’t we? Well here we are again—cardigans are your winter midlayer best pal. A lighter option that you can keep on for extra comfort whilst indoors, that will impress your grandma—what a smart young man! She’ll say—and a timeless classic. This Mohair Cardigan is unbeatable.

What do men wear under a cardigan?

A T-Shirt. Easy question. Let’s move on shall we?
