What is Breton stripe fabric, and what are its origin and characteristics?

Breton fabric refers to a heavy-grade, tightly-woven cotton jersey featuring iconic horizontal blue-and-white stripes. Originally created in 1858 for the French Navy in Brittany to help spot sailors who fell overboard, the official design originally featured 21 stripes, one for each of Napoleon’s victories. It is exceptionally durable, naturally breathable, and holds its structure over time. Modern Breton shirts use premium organic cotton in varying stripe widths and colourways for effortless marine-inspired style.
